Teacher-Written Lesson

The Institution of the Eucharist: The Last Supper

  • Written by Sophia Institute for Teachers
  • One 50-minute class period, plus homework

Lesson Overview

As the source and summit of our Faith, the Eucharist must be understood before any of the other Sacraments can come fully into focus. In this lesson, students will read the narrative in Luke 22:14-20 on the Institution of the Eucharist and identify Christ’s claims and commands. Students will ponder the truth and gravity of the statements Christ makes and what He is asking us to do.

  • How does the narrative of the Last Supper and the Institution of the Eucharist in Luke 22:14-20 help us to understand the source and summit of our Catholic Faith, the Blessed Sacrament?
  • What is the significance of the Last Supper and its relationship to the Jewish Passover meal of the Old Testament?
  • What is the new and everlasting Blood Covenant?

This resource includes a background essay, complete lesson plan, handouts, and an answer key.
