Lesson Overview

Pope Francis has caught the attention of Catholics and non-Catholics all throughout the world.  This has brought with it a lot of media attention, both good and bad.  Rather than rely on the media's account of the Pope's sayings and actions, it is most helpful to examine the Pope's own words in context in order to fairly and accurately judge them.  This assignment utilizes the in-depth interview with Pope Francis titled "A Big Heart Open to God" from the September 2013 issue of America Magazine.  Students will read the article looking for themes related to the nature of human kind, engage in an online discussion board, and then write a brief paper synthesizing their learning from the discussion.  Note: this assignment will require the creation of an online discussion board through whatever means are available to the teacher.  Students will also need to have internet access and access to the discussion board in order to complete the assignment.
